OOO as a Model of Good Citizenship
On Our Own in the Community
On Our Own and its staff truly exemplifies the notion of the private citizen investing himself fully in the well-being of his community. |
Empathy and understanding are key components of On Our Own. Because the On Our Own staff are all rehabilitated from mental health challenges such as those which afflict members, staff are able to invest themselves authentically in the recovery of members. The notion of Peer Support in and of itself belies the true devotion of On Our Own. Staff do not see themselves as superior or apart from those they help, but as good-intentioned peers. From sharing personal phone numbers to playing chess and listening to music, staff and members are united by On Our Own under a common commitment to recovery and each other's health.
